Statistics show that nearly 60% of all homeless men are in Manhattan, and many are mentally ill – yet the city remains determined to close the intake center on E. 30th St. next to Bellevue Hospital to make room for a luxury hotel.
The estimated 20,000 homeless men who seek shelter in New York annually will instead be diverted to the notorious Bedford-Atlantic Armory in Crown Heights, across the street from brownstones, churches and hundreds of seething homeowners.
The armory, among the worst-run in the city, is not close to any hospital. It’s also a known haven for drug dealing, prostitution and crowds of men who congregate in front of the shelter every day, trying to flag down passing trucks for work as day laborers.

Monologue | Aired Wednesday night on CBS: Anybody here from South Carolina? Their governor down there, Mark Sanford disappears. He’s gone for four days. The first time he said he was hiking the Appalachian Trail. Okay, I’m just dumb enough to believe that. Then he says, “No, no, no, forget the Appalachian Trail. I was in South America.” Now, I’m not sure I’m with him. Today he said he woke up in Las Vegas, hung over with a tiger and a baby.
I have to be careful here. I haven’t had much luck with jokes about governors, so I have to be careful.
But now it turns out that he was in Argentina with another woman. A married guy, got a family, he’s in Argentina with another woman. And here’s what I want to know — why can’t he be like our former governor and use a local escort service? What’s the problem?

Sanford didn’t take the heat alone, as several comics turned their jokes on the Republican Party as a whole.
NBC “Tonight Show” host Conan O’Brien joked that “people were shocked because Republicans don’t traditionally do well with Hispanic women.”
But CBS “Late Show” host David Letterman tried to step gingerly in joking about Sanford after going through a weeklong fight with Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin over a crude joke about the Republican’s daughter.
“I have to be careful here, I haven’t had much luck with jokes about governors” said Letterman, who couldn’t resist adding: “Why can’t he be like our governor and use a local escort service?”

In the wake of South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford’s admission to having an affair, evening and morning newscasts on NBC, CBS, and ABC all immediately identified him as a Republican. In contrast, in March of last year, the networks rarely identified disgraced New York Governor Eliot Spitzer as a Democrat in the wake of his affair with a prostitute.
In a 2008 study of evening and morning network newscasts following the Spitzer scandal, NewsBusters’ Rich Noyes found that within the first week of news coverage Spitzer was only identified as a Democrat 20% of the time. However, within the first 24 hours of Sanford’s confession to having an affair, he was identified as a Republican 100% of the time, during coverage on all the networks.
