Just over a year earlier, Darryl Strawberry had been diagnosed with colon cancer. It knocked him out for the entire 1998 postseason. Not schadenfreude at all…

Some have suggested that the recent discovery that both South Carolina Republican Governor Mark Sanford and Nevada Republican Senator John Ensign were having extra-marital affairs would be schadenfreude (joy at the suffering of others), and I have to disagree.  Likewise, the exposure of New York Democratic Governor Elliot Spitzer’s visits with prostitutes is no cause for schadenfreude either.
There is no joy in the broken hearts and damaged relationships.  No joy in the dishonesty, the deceit, the contempt, the lack of respect for their partners and voters.  No joy in the hypocrisy that both of these Republicans pilloried then Democratic President Bill Clinton when he was caught having an affair in the 1990s, and now both have participated in the very same activity that they themselves claimed was reprehensible and grounds for impeachment.

There is a random aspect to political scandal. Some politicians have had their careers ended by these events while others have survived and even gone on to become more popular than before. Some find that voters are more forgiving than we expect, while others have been able to convince the public that their accusers are politically motivated and have bigger problems. At the same time, some stories are simply too devastating to survive.
But there are some contexts that determine whether a damaging event becomes politically fatal. One is when a scandal unfolds at a moment in American history when there is a strong push for reform. During the 1970s and early 1980s, a series of powerful politicians saw their careers come to an end when their wrongdoing fed into popular arguments about the need for political reform. Besides President Richard Nixon, they included Congressman Wilbur Mills, who was exposed for an affair with a stripper whose stage name was Fanne Foxe, the “Argentine firecracker”; Congressman Wayne Hays, who had a relationship with a secretary who admitted she couldn’t type; and Senator Harrison Williams, caught in the Abscam scandal.

Why do men in power â the ones on pedestals â think they are above us and can get away with cheating on their spouses, particularly when media scrutiny is so intense and peccadilloes are arguably more politically damaging?

So like everyone else, I was glued to the TV set last Tuesday night watching the train wreck that is the Real Housewives of New Jersey. If you thought the other franchises of the show were bad, i.e. New York, Orange County, or Atlanta, this version was just the icing on the cake.
This season followed sisters Dina and Caroline, their sister-in-law Jacqueline, friend Theresa, and outcast Danielle. The only one who could tolerate Danielle was the sweet natured Jacqueline, and this was with good cause.  Danielle was featured in a book and was allegedly a prostitute, a drug smuggler, a cocaine user, and a child kidnapper, who was arrested for all of the above.
Danielle has “set the record straight” and denied all the claims except the fact that she was arrested, but she has never said why she was arrested besides her “I was at the wrong place at the wrong time”. She also is the ultimate cougar stating she wants a younger man or any man-but they have to have money and lots of it.

Much of the shows drama has centered on the book, Cop Without a Badge, written by Staubs ex-husband, Kevin Maher, who served as an FBI informant. She told People in a recent interview that despite what the book says, she never had a cocaine problem and was never a prostitute.
