New York Adult Entertainment: NY Senate leader Bruno, 80, faces corruption trial

Bruno thrived in the system, grabbing the New York Senate’s Republican majority’s leadership post in a 1994 overthrow. He doggedly courted high-tech projects for New York, often in his district, but in many ways, Bruno was an old-time pol: He was a guy who used phrases like “a man’s man,” occasionally cursed in news conferences, paused to chat with young female reporters and interns, and seethed when he felt a handshake deal was broken.
His name is carried on a sprawling minor league ballpark and a bust of him is prominently displayed at the revamped Albany International Airport.
Bruno resigned last summer only months after Democratic Gov. Eliot Spitzer — the political nemesis Bruno once dismissed as “fancy, dance-y, prance-y” — fell from power in a prostitution scandal. The three-year federal investigation of Bruno led to charges a few months after that.

A Serbian woman living illegally in London meets a melancholy (married) salesman who becomes obsessed with her. “To keep him coming back,” she says, she tells him stories, especially of her father: a Chetnik, then a Communist partisan, then a secret policeman under Tito — and, by her account, her first lover. How much is true? Is she a prostitute? Do the two consummate their affair? Questions linger in this meditation on the power of stories.

New York Strip Clubs: Kalim A. Bhatti for The New York Times

We were startled when he told us about the job, sure, but not deeply surprised. Sam has always found his own path. And he has never been much for workaday jobs. Neither operating the dishwasher at the food court sushi stand nor clearing tables at his dining hall held his interest, and he left both gigs after an unhappy semester.
Welcome to the working week, sang Elvis Costello. Oh, I know it don’t thrill you, I hope it don’t kill you.
As a little boy, Sam once asked me: “Dad, is there a job where you get paid a lot and don’t do much work?”
Being paid $15 an hour to sit around naked is one option. That’s nearly twice as much as most other student jobs. And it’s not like he’s dancing at Chippendale’s.
“There’s a difference between nude and nakedness,” says Charles Garoian, the director of the university’s visual arts program. Context is vital: a stripper is naked to arouse prurient urges, while a nude model is there to unleash an artist’s creativity.

New York Adult Entertainment: Lunch with the FT: Eliot Spitzer

Less than 18 months later, however, he self-destructed. FBI agents, tipped off by some unusual money transfers, wiretapped him making an assignation with a high-end call girl. Word leaked to the media that Spitzer, who had investigated and castigated prostitutes as attorney-general, was “Client 9” of the Emperor’s Club prostitution ring. He resigned in March 2008, saying, “I cannot allow my private failings to disrupt the people’s work,” and federal prosecutors opted not to charge.

But the spectre of Ashley Dupré, the 22-year-old prostitute who became Spitzer’s downfall, hangs over the conversation. At one point we are comparing notes on skiing, and I make a pitch for how nice it was to have a catered chalet with what I refer to as a “houseboy or housegirl” to cook all the meals.

2004 Brings prosecution against several prostitution rings. Announces the arrest of 16 people for operating a high-end prostitution ring.

2008 Reported to be a client of a prostitution ring. Resigns as governor on March 12.
