Just because crime is down in Ridgewood doesn’t mean the men and women of the Ridgewood Police Department aren’t busy day and night. The force can reflect on a 2010 that featured drug crimes, prostitution, aggravated assaults, pedestrian accidents and deaths, along with contentious Valley protests and a scandal from within.

New York Adult Entertainment: Apex Housing: National Model of Success in Westbury

Their collective height is a testament to the above and beyond effort of the non-profit group responsible for bringing the Apex project to life: the Kimmel Housing Development Foundation.
Formerly the Anna and Philip Kimmel Foundation, the group dates back to 1994, according to Chairman Howard Kimmel, whose gentle presence is felt throughout the complex.
Apex I and II redefined the term “affordable housing,” and its traditional connotation was destroyed, as was the overcrowded house which stood on the site more than a decade ago.
“When everyone was saying, ‘Don’t go into the area because of crime, prostitution and drugs,’ we had a sufficient vision to go into the area – not enough money but a vision – and we proved successful,” said Kimmel, who along with his team, hopes to rid the affordable housing phrase of its negative associations.

New York Adult Entertainment: The Robert Durst defense: Harlem killer appropriates infamous Houston …

Indeed, the story isn’t so different from Durst’s claim that his neighbor was shot, chopped into pieces and distributed into trash bags (which later washed ashore) entirely out of self defense and a resulting panic. With his massive wealth, Durst was able to hire a top attorney and he won the case (although it did inspire an episode of Law & Order and the movie All Good Things.)
Malik may not be so fortunate. The suitcase was uprooted last week by a man sifting through rubbish in East Harlem, and Malik was arrested north of NYC on Monday after cell phone records were used to track him down. Court records show that he has been on probation since January of 2009 after admitting to attempted robbery.
His current story that the murder of Williams was a matter of self defense doesn’t match up to police forensic evidence. There’s even suspicion that Williams was hired by Malik as a prostitute, and when she asked for extra money, he went in for the kill. Malik has been charged with second-degree murder.

New York Adult Entertainment: City Lights

But the elegant James had little use for these authorsimagine writing about prostitutes and slum dwellers! Though born in Manhattan, the master of nuance had spent decades away from the city before returning for a visit in 1906. He was appalled. A trip to the Lower East Side, crowded with Jewish immigrants fleeing the pogroms of Czarist Russia, proved particularly dismaying. There is no swarming like that of Israel when once Israel has got a start, wrote James, and the scene here bristled, at every step, with the signs and sounds, immitigable, unmistakable, of a Jewry that had burst all bounds. After visiting a tearoom where he heard a nerve-jangling mix of American and Yiddish phrases, the author made a prediction: The Hebrew conquest of New York would bite the national tongue. Whatever we shall know it for, certainly, we shall not know it for English.

New York Adult Entertainment: Mount Vernon City Council files its strip club petition

The Mount Vernon City Council filed its Article 78 petition in the state Supreme Court today.
The council wants the court to reverse the Mount Vernon Zoning Board of Appeals’ approval of an expansion for Sue’s Rendezvous, an adult entertainment club at 96 Gramatan Ave.
The council argues in its petition that the zoning board’s process was capricious, flawed and in violation of the law.
Here’s what the council’s law firm filed today:

New York Adult Entertainment: Donna Simpson, the World’s Fattest Mom, Is Slowly Killing Herself

It seems obvious that Simpson has a secret (or maybe not-so-secret) death wish, and several mental health issues to be dealt with.  I don’t contend that the woman has no right to raise her children, but I can’t understand how it is that subjects of the television hit “Hoarders” have had children removed from their custody and yet this woman is above reproach?  She’s hoarding food, eating 12,000 calories a day, and it has been argued that Simpson’s tragic lifestyle will wind up costing New Jersey taxpayers thousands.  Simpson’s boyfriend, who is the father of her youngest child, not only encourages her to eat such enormous quantities, but supports her selling access to her body online.  Given the fetish-y nature of feeder culture, isn’t Simpson engaging in a form of prostitution?  The feeder-feedee relationship Simpson and her boyfriend are engaging in sets a horrific example for Simpson’s children, and will likely result in her early death.  I hope the constant media coverage this mega mom gets will lead to the kind of intervention needs.

New York Adult Entertainment: Corrected: Cuomo, next New York governor, gets second chance

… Andrew is intensely, intensely political. He wants to succeed where his father failed,” Siegel said.
But the governorship also comes with the risk of failure. Cuomo enters office after running unopposed in the Democratic primary and against a Republican rival, Carl Paladino, who was so mistake-prone that Cuomo merely had to avoid controversy.
“If the state government collapses, which is not entirely out of the question, he is not going to move on,” said Ken Sherrill, a professor of political science at Hunter College in New York.
The governor also benefits from comparisons to his predecessors.
This could have been the second term for Eliot Spitzer, who entered office four years ago with high promise after serving as attorney general, when he became the original “Sheriff of Wall Street.” But Spitzer resigned 14 months after taking office when he was caught patronizing prostitutes.

New York Adult Entertainment: Totowa Avenue Bar Shut Down for 10 Days

City officials are considering imposing other sanctions against the Corona Bar, which is across the street from School #5. In fact, at its November 30 meeting, the city council was on the verge on voting to reject the bar’s application for a renewal of its entertainment/show license, which allows it to have music from a disc jockey or juke box.
But officials decided to wait until they had a full report on the bar’s track reports, as well as input from their liquor license investigator, before taking the vote. That’s been scheduled for January 11.
“You don’t run a good establishment,” said City Council President Aslon Goow Sr. “You don’t have a nice bar and it’s not nice for the neighborhood.” Goow said city police records show five pages of calls to the bar’s area. “It doesn’t end,” Goow said. “Call after call after call. Fights, stabbings, prostitution – these are the kind of calls that come from your establishment.”
