All WhatchamaColumnsNicholas Kristof will draw a crowd to McMinnville Community Center Monday night for his reading from “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide.”
Interest runs high due to his local roots, his acclaim as award-winning author and New York Times columnist, and the international nerve struck by this book. Co-authored by his wife, Sheryl WuDunn, the book focuses on abuse of women worldwide in the areas of sex trafficking and forced prostitution, gender-based violence and maternal mortality.
Our news stories may focus on his achievements and the best-selling book, but whenever Nick comes to town I think about those local roots.

New York Adult Entertainment: Real Life Super Heroes To Protect Sex Workers In New York

Real Life Super Heroes To Protect Sex Workers In New York
You rarely see Spider-Man targetting those who threaten prostitutes. Superman has never been seen chasing down a John who got a bit too handy. One of the little-recognised aspects of Ennis, Conner and Palmiotti’s The Pro is it stars a woman who has to cope with her own problems, while the superheroes of the world have better things to do.
Well, in New York, that’s not the case.
The New York Initiative, a group of real life superheroes Bleeding Cool has covered before, who usually concentrate on helping with the homeless, providing food, clothing and the like.
But with the Long Island Serial Killer in the headlines, with ten women killed and dismembered so far, a number of them sex workers, they’ve stepped up to… well,  protect the prostitutes.

New York Strip Clubs: The Sport of Kings

The great thing about guys is that we can have fun watching anything, which we express by not listening and instead quoting movies: Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Four Weddings and a Funeral, European Vacation. Also, guys know that women are most vulnerable at weddings, so we are genetically programmed to search for the hottest, sluttiest guests in this case, Sarah Ferguson’s daughters. And all of us feel horrible for William since, at his bachelor party, he must have had to stick money with his grandmother’s face on it into strippers‘ G-strings.

New York Strip Clubs: Cops say they’ve busted huge Park Slope heroin ring

But that was news to Joe’s Pizza employees, who said they never knew their restaurant had become a smack swap meet.
“I don’t know anything about [the drug deals],” said a pizza shop manager, who only identified himself as Ali. “I just heard about this today.”
Rivera’s attorney Joseph Corrozzo did not returned a call in time for our up-all-night deadline.
None of the alleged drug dealers resided in Park Slope. Most of the suspects lived in either Windsor Terrace or Sunset Park, police said.
Yet the brownstone neighborhood is slowly getting a reputation as a one-stop shopping destination for drug buyers.
In January, cops arrested a group of prescription medication pushers led by a stripper turned medical student who sold thousands of Adderall pills throughout Park Slope and on Craigslist.

New York Strip Clubs: The Rev. David Wilkerson dies at 79; founder of Teen Challenge ministry

… The church has failed,” Wilkerson said in a 1963 interview with The Times. “And young people are tired of its social club image. They wants some real and vital answers to give them courage to resist urban pressures and temptations.”
Teen Challenge centers were later established throughout Southern California to work with drug users of all ages in addition to troubled youths. The organization now has a national and international reach.
In “The Cross and the Switchblade,” Wilkerson wrote about his early years in New York. The 1963 book became a best-seller and was made into a 1970 movie starring Pat Boone and Erik Estrada.
Wilkerson moved his ministry headquarters to Texas in the 1970s and launched World Challenge, an international evangelical outreach organization.
In 1987, Wilkerson returned to New York to start Times Square Church, a nondenominational Protestant church in an area of Manhattan that was then riddled with X-rated movie houses, strip clubs, prostitution and drugs. It continues to hold services in a converted Broadway theater.

New York Strip Clubs: Hey Kids, Let’s Put on a Secret Show

The deal with Seller prohibits Sullivan from changing any of the dialogue, lyrics or musical numbers and altering or editing any of the scenes. Even though it’s set in a Downtown Los Angeles landscape, the show remains New York-centric.
“To protect their art, we’re not allowed to change it,” Sullivan said.
That, however, doesn’t prevent her from bringing some neighborhood touches to the show: Downtown artists will create the sets and local musicians will perform the score.
“Parts of Downtown L.A. are very industrial and remind me of New York’s Alphabet City in the mid-1990s,” Sullivan said. “It’s un-gentrified and at the same time still feels like a strong community.”
The original show’s youthful energy continues here with a young cast. Montiel is 20 and actresses Emily Goglia and Amber Stevens, who play Maureen (a bisexual performance artist) and Mimi (a stripper and HIV-positive drug addict), respectively, are 23 and 24.
