How is it that NYC, the most innovative, modern, leading role model for so many cities in our world, can also have such a strong position that does not include gay marriage, immigration, civil rights, etc?!
New York seems to be much more conservative than we could have every possibly imagined. Can you explain this enigma? She use to be what she looks like, but now . . .?

Sure, we’re the birthplace of the American Communist Party, the N.A.A.C.P. and the gay rights movement, But nowadays, you practically have to scrounge for pornography, even in Times Square. (That we have a Museum of Sex suggests just how much of an artifact sex has become compared with a generation ago when out-of-town visitors were instead greeted by the prostitutes lining Eighth Avenue).
