ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) – On his first trip to the state’s scandal-scarred Capitol, New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan had a message that government isn’t the savior for society’s ills.
Dolan says the scandals show people must look for answers spiritually, not through government.
It’s the first visit to Albany by a New York archbishop in 12 months, almost to the day when Dolan’s predecessor, Cardinal Edward Egan, was to meet with then-Gov. Eliot Spitzer. That meeting was canceled when Spitzer was named in a prostitution investigation that soon forced his resignation.
Now Gov. David Paterson faces two scandals that threaten his job.
He is being investigated for contact with a woman who had accused a top aide of domestic violence and of breaking a state gift ban.
