NEW YORK (Reuters) – New York Governor David Paterson trails badly behind state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, his likely challenger for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, a poll showed on Monday.
Paterson, whose campaign kicked off over the weekend, lags 42 points behind Cuomo, according to the survey of registered voters by Siena Research Institute of Loudonville, New York.
Paterson launched his candidacy in suburban New York City and in suburban Buffalo, where some 200 people and few local officials turned up. The campaign postponed a rally in Harlem so more big-name Democrats who were out of town could attend, local media reported.
Paterson’s popularity has dwindled since he took office in 2008, when Governor Eliot Spitzer resigned in a prostitution scandal.
